Shell Shock: Why the Tortoise Beat the Hare

By March 27, 2019 No Comments

It’s a classic tale. We all read it as kids: The Tortoise and the Hare . “I manage a fleet of vehicles, why are you talking to me about a children’s book?” GLAD YOU ASKED! HERE’S WHY:

The optimal speed for your vehicles for peak efficient MPG is 55 mph

Seems rather slow, doesn’t it? But hey, you don’t manage this fleet for the short term gain of getting somewhere faster… you’re in it for the long haul (…only a little pun intended).

This'll Blow Your Mind... Let's Break It Down Even More

  • 60 mph = 3% LESS efficient
  • 65 mph = 8% LESS efficient
  • 70 mph = 17% LESS efficient
  • 75 mph = 23% LESS efficient
  • 80 mph = 28% LESS efficient

Isn’t it incredible the difference just 5 mph can make? When we drive our personal vehicles, going over the speed limit by 5 mph doesn’t seem like a big deal, but in a fleet vehicle? It’s not only costly, it’s dangerous!

According to The National Transport Safety Board, between 2004 and 2017, more than 31% of traffic deaths were related to speeding — that rivals the number of drunk driving deaths. Which means, sadly, speed does in fact kill.

NERD ALERT:

What if you were notified via smartphone or computer when one of your fleet vehicles is not only exceeding the speed limit, but, way out of an optimal, efficient speed range? Well, since it’s even more dangerous to text and drive, you could call that driver and have him or her reduce their speed. Which, in turn, demonstrates to all fleet drivers that they need to practice proper, safe driving protocols.

Translation: Better, Safer Drivers = Money Saved on Gas and Money Saved on Accidents

That’s the power of Smart Fleet’s GPS Tracking Software and that’s why we brought up the children’s book The Tortoise and the Hare… to ensure that your fleet is always the Tortoise, and always wins the race.
